Summer Adventure of Szerlok

Chapter 1 – The Morning When Everything Changed

The sun was so bright that I could hardly see the next obstacle on the Ramp. And that was bad, because I wanted to make a trick so cool that my whole crew would scream with excitement. Or even better — scream louder than Flip’s gang. I tried to focus only on the jump. Just one more and I would be the Ramp Champion. My helmet was sliding to the side, my goggles were foggy, and my legs felt heavy like jelly. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Flip, my biggest rival, start his run with perfect speed and perfect balance. It made me even more nervous.

„Come on, Szerlok! You can do it!” I heard in my head. Maybe it was my friends shouting. Maybe it was just me. My heart was beating like crazy. And suddenly I couldn’t lift my feet. I was stuck to the ground. Completely stuck. What a disaster! I pulled my bike with all my strength. Nothing. Flip was already flying in the air, and I was still standing at the top of the Ramp like a statue. One more try, and — BANG. I hit something hard. A dull sound echoed around me. Of course. I was on the floor. In my bedroom. I sat up, confused. Where was my bike? Where was Flip? Where were the boys?

„Sweetie, are you okay? Why are you sitting on the floor? Get up, you have a visitor,” Mom said quickly while picking up my clothes from the floor. I expected a long speech about cleaning my room. But she didn’t say anything. Not even one word! I was shocked. Then I realised: my terrible Ramp failure was only a dream. A nightmare. I felt so relieved that I jumped up and hugged Mom. I never do that when someone could see me — I’m Szerlok, the fearless Ramp Master.

„Nothing happened. Who’s the visitor? The boys?”

„No, no. Our new neighbour. Have you met Kasia? She’ll be in your class in September. She came with her mom. They’re looking for their dog. She ran away last night. Are you coming?”

I froze with my half-eaten cheese sandwich in my hand. „Kasia? What dog? What September?” School felt as far away as Mars. But my detective brain started working slowly. I followed Mom to the door. Kasia was a girl with chestnut hair in a high ponytail. Her eyes were bright blue, like watercolour paint. She wore denim shorts, a colourful striped T-shirt, and white sneakers with shiny stripes. She looked… well, like a girl. I noticed her scraped knee and very straight posture — like a ballerina. We looked at each other for a moment. I was curious. She was polite.

„We’re really worried,” her mom said. „Nikki never ran away before. Since we moved here two weeks ago, she sometimes disappears, but she always comes back at night. Today she didn’t. Kasia is very upset. Right, sweety? Oh, and you two should meet. You’ll be classmates.” Kasia lifted her head politely.

„Kasia. But you can call me Kate. I prefer that. Hi. Have you seen Nikki? She’s a golden retriever, very friendly. Maybe she was here yesterday? We live past the little bridge.” Her voice was calm but sad. She was trying very hard not to cry.

„I’m Szerlok. I mean, Max, but everyone calls me Szerlok. I like detective mysteries. And I’m good at finding things. And…” I wanted to say more, but Kate’s mom interrupted: „Oh, perfect! Maybe you can help Kate look for Nikki? I have to go to work.” She spoke super fast, waved goodbye, and left. Mom smiled at us. „Lemonade and peanut-butter pancakes?” It wasn’t even a question.

„No, thank you. I’ll keep looking. Szerlok, are you coming?” Kate asked.

„Mom, can I?” I already knew she would say yes. It was summer, the weather was amazing, and all kids could stay outside all day.

„Of course! Be careful. Pancakes at noon!”

Spending the morning with a girl was not in my plans. I imagined my friends at the Ramp, practising flips and jumps. Real boy stuff. But I also felt excited — a new mystery to solve.

„You coming?” Kate didn’t wait for my answer. She ran toward the gate. I followed her. And now I can say: that was the moment the most amazing day of my summer began. But back then, I had no idea.
